We Are Not Ready for Revival

How tragic it would be if our spiritual warfare and intercessory strategies worked and God today answered our prayers for "revival" and church growth! If the Spirit of God moved sovereignly in our communities effecting massive conversions that swept multitudes into our churches the results would be tragic because while we have prayed, fasted, and prepared our hearts, we have still not prepared the house for the work God wants to do in the world.

Theocratic Church Government

I believe that God will not send "revival" to the church, and the harvest He has promised, until He is allowed to rule and reign. There are lukewarm Laodicean "board run churches," and unBiblical "pastor run churches." Neither fit the scriptural model. When taken to the extremes, one can become a democracy, the other a dictatorship. I say democracy is doomed! Kingdoms must crumble! Jesus Christ must rule His church through His Five Fold Ministry/Leadership Teams. Only then will we be ready for "revival."

The Error of Spiritual Warfare

In the spiritual warfare and mapping movement efforts are made to identify and overthrow the ruling demonic principalities and powers of each area. We are told to research and repent over social and governmental abuses from the past and present. We are assured that repenting over historical sin will remove the legal ground that gives the enemy authority, and enable us to push back the forces of darkness and see the Kingdom of God established in our cities.

We have prayed
for Christ to conquer
our cities
and the church itself
has not yet been conquered.

I am sure that these things do need to be done. However, I am convinced that up to now we have been going after the wrong kingdom. We have identified the wrong power hindering the church. Before we can effectively deal with the demonic hierarchy, the illegitimate government of the church needs to be identified and eliminated. We have tried to bring down the spiritual rulers over areas when the church itself is not yet ruled according to God's plan. We have prayed for Christ to conquer our cities and the church itself has not yet been conquered. In fact, the illegitimate government of the church may be the very thing that gives the forces of darkness the legal right to operate.

Repentance

The Church Growth movement is certainly right about one thing. We do need to repent. We need to repent over

  • our presumptuous praying,
  • our ill-advised spiritual warfare based more on research into the past than on present revelation into God's purposes, and
  • our participation in a system of church government that God hates.

The "strongman" who stands in opposition to the church as it is now is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

Warfare Will Not Work

Spiritual warfare and church growth tactics may have worked elsewhere, but they will not work here. They may have worked in the past, but they will not work now. They will not work because a merciful God will not permit it. No matter how much we study and analyse, draw maps and create charts, we will not be able to duplicate what has happened in Argentina, El Salvador, South Korea, or any other place. God's agenda for here and now, for this place, for this time in history, is to fully establish Theocratic Church Government. Only in a Theocratic Church is Jesus Christ Lord. And it is the only structure truly equipped to handle the harvest.

First Things First

The government of the church
must be in order
before we presume to engage
that of the enemy.

In Ephesians 4 Saint Paul talks about proper church government through the Apostolic Team of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers. In Ephesians 6 he explains the realities of spiritual warfare. He says we are equipped with the full armour of God. He talks about engaging the principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. But, it is no coincidence that the teaching about Theocratic Church Government comes before the teaching on Spiritual Warfare. The church needs to be established in Ephesians 4 before trying to wage the warfare of Ephesians 6. The government of the church must be in order before we presume to engage that of the enemy. We need to clean up our own back yard first.
