The Very Next Thing on God's Agenda

I believe that the very next thing on God's agenda for His church is the revelation and restoration of Theocratic Church Government as expressed in the Five Fold system of church ministry and government found in Ephesians 4. 11 – 13.

"And he gave some, apostles;
and some, prophets;
and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting of the saints,
for the work of the ministry,
for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Till we all come in the unity of the faith,
and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
unto a perfect man,
unto the measure of the stature
of the fulness of Christ:"(KJV)

Five Fold.

A People Prepared

We are people prepared for radical change. It seems to me that in recent years, no matter in which stream of the Spirit God has placed you - Pentecostal, Charismatic, Evangelical, Reformed, Catholic, Orthodox - and to what arrangement of the ecclesiastical alphabet you align yourself, we have been hungry for more of God. As we have hungered for Him God has done a mighty work of tearing down, rooting out, and eliminating in our individual lives. Hindrances have been removed, our motives have changed, our lifestyles have been transformed, our passion for Christ inflamed. For some of us, even the way (and sometime the where) we worship, both individually and corporately, is unrecognizable compared to before we felt such a powerful touch of God's hand.

Transformation Not Complete

However, the transforming work the Lord desires to do is not yet complete. How we govern our life as individuals Christians has changed yet the governmental style and structure of the Church has not. Ministry and leadership models have remained the same. Because of this, the "fresh move of God" in some churches has stalled. We need to ask, "Why?"

Corporate Renewal

I am convinced that the "mighty work of tearing down, rooting out, and eliminating" that has happened to us as individuals must now happen corporately. I believe the Lord of the Church is waiting . . .

  • waiting for us to get the message,
  • waiting for us to receive fresh revelation as to His purposes for His Body,
  • waiting, above all, for a restoration of Theocratic Church Government through the recognition and release of His Five Fold Ministry/Leadership.

There are some steps we cannot skip, and this is one of them. We must go from our present "church" structure to a Theocratic model that makes Jesus King. There is, after all, no other biblical model for government in the Church of Jesus Christ. We must do things God's way.

Theocratic Church Government

I have spent at least the past ten years pondering this matter in my heart. At all times it has been at least a continual concern, and at specific times it has been a consuming passion. As of late it has once again moved from the back burner to the front, and at present it is at full boil. "While I was musing, the fire burned."

. . .the absence of
Theocratic Church
Government . . .
is the reason why
so little of
our potential
is being fulfilled.

I believe that the absence of Theocratic Church Government is the key to so many of the problems we face in the church today. It is the reason why so little of our potential is being fulfilled. While I will speak of it most often in relation to that which I know best - those churches regarded as "Spirit-filled" - I believe that this Biblical model is applicable to the practical working of any church any where.

I confess that writing on church matters is not my favourite thing to do. I much prefer to "just think" and contemplate on prayer and personal intimacy with God. But the truth is that focussing one’s life on prayer and living close to God affects more than just daily living. When our individual spiritual lives come into divine order and improve, it flows naturally that we would want our corporate lives to do so as well. A closer walk with God also has a profound influence on our perspectives and experience of "church." We see things we never noticed before, and have insights we would not ordinarily have. Intimacy with God affects everything.

The Very Next Thing

I go to conferences as rarely as my "Sweet Caroline" does frequently. She recently heard the Rev. Bobby Conner declare, "The next thing God wants to do is governmental." In fact, every where I turn I am hearing the same thing. Be that as it may, I feel like I can ponder this matter no longer. I must share what I know thus far. In so doing I confess that

I am an imperfect man with an incomplete revelation.

I may have some pieces of the puzzle, you may have others.

My heart's desire in writing is simply to stimulate our godly thinking about some very important matters. I also know that there are probably others who have written on this subject, however I have, thus far, read none of them. Therefore, these are all my own untempered thoughts. I pray they will be a blessing to you. I believe that what I have written here is the most important thing I have written thus far. Let us hear what the Spirit is saying to the church today.
